Building Long-Term Power From the Ground Up

Across the country, Republicans have poured resources into state and local elections for decades, changing maps, voting laws, school policy, reproductive freedom, and fundamental civil rights. The result is a national imbalance of power that cannot be corrected at the federal level alone.

To protect democratic institutions and strengthen progressive governance, we must compete everywhere, especially in places that traditional Democratic infrastructure has under‑resourced.

We are here because the cost of standing down is permanent.

Work

What we do

We are a small-dollar–powered PAC, raising grassroots money at scale to support moderate, progressive, and pro-democracy Democratic candidates at every level of the ballot: federal, state, and local.

№ 1. Winning key races at every level

Maximizing our combined federal and non-federal disbursements through direct support of federal, state, and local candidates, while also investing in local Democratic Party power-building

№ 2. Support permanent organizing infrastructure

Organizing efforts often lack continuity between cycles. We focus on helping local Democrats build a sustained, long‑term presence in key counties in must win territory.

№ 3. Investing early and consistently

Building local organizing capacity takes time and is long-term

Founder's Story

Democrats Together grew out of what David Phelps kept seeing while working with local and state Democrats across different communities.

Leaders were doing real, meaningful work, but they often didn’t have the steady infrastructure and external support needed to stay aligned and speak clearly to the people they serve in their local communities.

David watched strong local leaders trying to carry too much on their own, not because they lacked talent, but because they lacked someone who could stay with them over time. Candidates frequently ran in one cycle and then, after failing to win, left behind a shattered or non-existent local party organization..

Over the years, it became clear to David that this wasn’t an individual problem but a structural gap. Local Democrats needed support that started with listening — real conversations about what people care about in their own towns — and then helped turn that insight into clear party-building that could hold up beyond a single cycle. They needed someone who wasn’t just present during election season, but someone who could help them build long-term capacity.

That understanding is what led David to launch Democrats Together.

The Democrats Together role is not to tell local Democrats what to say or which candidate to support. Its work begins with listening, understanding how communities are experiencing national, state, and local issues, and then providing leaders with the resources to build infrastructure, organize grassroots support, get out the vote, develop messaging and communications that make sense for where they live, and be sustainable for the long term.

Democrats Together exists to help Democrats grow, stay aligned, and build durable local leadership, and is committed to being there with them for the long haul.
